COASTAL JOY – New Works by Mary-Gail King

A new collection celebrating the wild light and living spirit of the California coast.

These paintings accompany my upcoming children’s book, A Channel Islands Alphabet, inspired by the extraordinary plants and animals of the Channel Islands.

ART AS MEDITATION

I paint as a way of listening—with eyes, heart, and hands.

Standing at the altar of my easel, I wrap myself in my paint-spattered apron.

The rustle of brushes, the hollow clink of the turpenoid can—these sounds bring me into the present moment.

Gentle with possibilities, willing to play, I create art rooted in nature and guided by reverence, curiosity, and joy.

ABOUT MY WORK

I am a coastal California artist, author, and arts educator.

My paintings draw from the ocean, the Channel Islands, gardens, and the sky surrounding my studio. I’ve taught thousands of students—from children discovering art for the first time to adults reconnecting with creativity.

My workshops and creative practice blend color, movement, nature study, and journaling—inviting others into moments of deep attention and creative freedom.

A richly illustrated children’s book celebrating the wildlife of the Channel Islands—our “Galápagos of the North.”

Each page pairs playful watercolor art with short, engaging natural history notes for young readers and nature lovers. The book will be formatted to easily deconstruct and frame your favorite images!
